We've just concluded the #Fachkommunikation (specialized communication) session of the 2025 Conference of the Gesellschaft für Angewandte Linguistik e.V. (GAL), which this year focused on #Legal #Linguistics.
Conveying knowledge in legal settings can take many forms and bring various challenges. Can we translate system-dependent legal texts into the legal languages of other nations? How can complex criminal procedures be communicated in documentaries aimed at lay audiences? What challenges do forensic linguists face in court? And can highly complex legal language - in leglislation for example - be made accessible through #EasyLanguage?
These were just some of the many captivating topics we presented and discussed during these two productive days!

All the more important to engage in discussions on innovative approaches to the interconnections between language, #anthropology, and #cognition. This year’s event, titled "Language and Law in an Age of Uncertainty and Transition," has brought together leading legal-linguistic scholars, including Jan Engberg (Aarhus), Prof. Dr. Karin Luttermann (Ingolstadt), Christoph Hafner (Hong Kong), Frances Olsen (Los Angeles), Anne Lise Kjær (Copenhagen), Victoria Guillén-Nieto (Alicante), Kevin Müller (Zurich), Dieter Stein (Düsseldorf), and many more.
Participants share innovative perspectives and research on topics such as European #multilingualism, #courtroom language, legal interpretation, and #extremist narratives.
In my talk, I applied a frame-semantic approach to examine how the unique knowledge elements of the U.S. legal concepts #deposition and #discovery appear in multimodal forms in the TV show #TheGoodWife, and to explore the challenges these culture-specific concepts pose for equivalence in German #dubbing and #subtitling.

The 10th Franco-German Day for Young Researchers was organized by the Ambassade de France en Allemagne, Université franco-allemande Deutsch-Französische Hochschule UFA DFH & Science Allemagne, providing an important interdisciplinary platform for young researchers working in a Franco-German context to identify key strategies and develop new projects aimed at strengthening #scientific and #academic cooperation between #France and #Germany.
As a representative of the Université Bourgogne Europe & the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz – which maintain a strong partnership through a variety of binational degrees, #cotutelle PhDs, a graduate school for binational doctoral students, and one of the very first Franco-German professorships (#ChaireFrancoAllemande) – I was honored to take part in these fruitful discussions on academic freedom, access to knowledge and resources, and the protection of the future of this valuable cooperation.

We had such a great time at this year's conference on Concept Systems and Frames in Terminology (#CSFT22), held at the Leopold-Franzens Universität Innsbruck.
#FrameSemantics was initially designed to describe adequate understanding of standard language. Having an entire conference on its application to #terminology shows how interconnected linguistic theories have become – and how much more they can unfold in the future.
